#TogetherForBedfordshire | We have had reports of a number of bikes and e-bikes being stolen in robberies recently across the county.
We have stepped up patrols in town centres and are developing operations to tackle robberies head on.
But you can help us to help you by making it harder for bike thieves: • Register your bike here: https://orlo.uk/O4hqO • Identify your bike and protect it with a security marking kit and warning label • Do consider attaching a tracking device concealed under your saddle or in your handlebars • Every time you leave your bike at home or out and about LOCK IT SECURELY
These precautions will deter thieves and, if your bike is stolen and later recovered, make it easier for us to return it.
It’s also worth being aware of which e-bikes are legal…
Legal electric bikes – also known as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) – can be purchased and ridden without registration, insurance or a driver’s licence. They must be:
Pedal Assistance Only The motor must assist only when the rider is pedalling. It cannot provide power on its own (i.e.,no throttle-only operation unless limited to 6 km/h for starting). Motor Power Limit The motor must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts.
Speed Limit The motor must cut off assistance when the bike reaches 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Age Requirement Riders must be at least 14 years old to legally ride an e-bike on public roads.
If an e-bike does not meet the above criteria, it is classified as a moped or motorcycle, meaning you would need; a driving licence, insurance, registration, helmet use and compliance with vehicle tax and MOT (if applicable).
